iCana to Present Technical Paper on Thermal Challenges in GaAs PA Design for 5G Applications at IMS2023
iCana’s Staff Thermal Engineer, Sheng Hung Tsai (Ross), will present a technical paper titled “Thermal Challenges in GaAs PA Design for 5G Applications” at the RFIC Symposium, as part of the International Microwave Symposium (IMS2023) which runs from 11-16 June in San Diego, California. The paper, authored by iCana engineers Sheng Hung Tsai (Ross), Chih Sheng Yeh, Clement Potier, Bharat Thota, Henrik Andersen, and Brecht François, will focus on the thermal challenges in GaAs power amplifier design and how improved thermal modeling and layout optimizations can lead to state-of-the-art performance.
As the demand for 5G wireless infrastructure continues to increase, it is necessary to densify and to deliver more power, wider bandwidth, and higher linearity. iCana’s range of RF components for the small cell RF Front End (RFFE) offers a solution to these challenges. The company’s gain amplifiers (D2S/S2D) are integrated with the passive balun, the receiver front end module (RxFEM) is integrated in a dual-channel configuration, and the Power Amplifier (PA) is designed in Doherty architecture for optimal efficiency and linearity in a minimal footprint. However, the complexity of integrating PAs with high output power presents challenging thermal management and ruggedness issues.
The technical paper showcases a 4W GaAs PA for the 5G FR1 market, with a focus on linearity and ruggedness (ARQSP4450-4). The investigation concentrates on thermal management and how to overcome challenges like thermal runaway and thermal dissipation modeling in GaAs transistors, providing valuable insights for PA designers.
We are excited to share our expertise and state-of-the-art solutions at IMS2023. For more information about this and other presentations at the RFIC Symposium, please visit the RFIC-IEEE website.
